Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is an age-related eye disease that occurs when your macula – the layer of tissue in your retina that provides sharp central vision – begins to deteriorate. Macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss in Americans who are 65+ years old.

Macular Degeneration Symptoms
Symptoms of macular degeneration are usually not painful. You may notice:
- Distorted, fuzzy vision
- Shadowy areas in the center of your vision
- You need a brighter light for reading
- Colors appear faded
- You have trouble recognizing faces
People with macular degeneration also typically have trouble adapting to lower light levels. Most patients begin to develop macular degeneration once they pass the age of 45, which is why it’s so important to undergo regular eye examinations with your eye doctor.
Types of Macular Degeneration
There are two main types of macular degeneration:
- Dry macular degeneration – This form of macular degeneration occurs when the cells in your macula start to die off, eventually causing blurry central vision. Most patients still have their peripheral (side) vision even if their central vision has been lost. It is possible to have a strong vision in one eye that makes up for macular degeneration in your other eye.
- Wet macular degeneration – Wet macular degeneration is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels beneath your retina. These fragile vessels leak blood and fluid, which cause the macula to swell. As a result, lines that used to appear straight may suddenly seem curved in your vision. If this symptom is happening to you, call Dr. Brooks right away at (972) 736-9347. Wet macular degeneration must be treated quickly to prevent rapid central vision loss.
